The LS50's can't really play any louder than 105dB (20dB louder than their 85dB@1 watt specification). Connectivity is straightforward, there's a pair of RCA inputs, one XLR input for mono operation, and a pair of speaker wire binding posts. Two Aegirs in dual-mono gave me a distinctive sound. Please note that the LS50 impedance dips down to 3.2 ohm. Bingo, the best of the .7s sound -- transparency, big as outdoors soundstage, gorgeous midrange -- they were all there, and I noted the treble was better than I've heard in a while. With the stereo mix on Kraftwerk's "3D" Blu-ray, the soundstaging was in fact remarkably three-dimensional, and the palpable textures of the synths and their super tight basslines demonstrated Vidar's grip on the LS50s' woofers. I reviewed Schiit's overachieving $699 Freya all-tube preamplifier last weekend, now it's the matching $699 Vidar solid-state power amplifier's turn, and it's a honey! Could I get by with a just a Schiit Sys ($50)? Putting Schiit’s half-width Saga pre-amplifier (US$349) and Vidar power amplifier (US$699) through their paces a year ago, I pitted them against AURALiC’s Polaris (US$3500), Vinnie Rossi’s LIO (US$5500 and up) and the Peachtree’s nova300 (US$2299) to find the Schiit pile – functional shortcomings notwithstanding – capable of pulling up alongside the more costly, tidier integrateds.
Fueled by the Aegir, the LS50’s sound took on a burnished glow, with the tone richer and sweeter than I’m used to. KEF LS50 Wireless Roon R.O.C.K. Sp Amps: Schiit Ragnorak, CHT Gizmo; Desk Sp: KEF LS50, CHT WAF-1, Emotiva Airmotiv 4S ; LH Labs 2014 orders not received: Geek Wave 64, Source 4T fi, Pulse Infinity DAC x2 w/ LS USB 2Gx2, GPA S100 w/sub out Correction: Audio Science Review measured useable power at 23wpc when running a pair of Aegirs in monoblock mode vs. 19.5wpc when running a single Aegir in stereo single-ended mode: While the descriptions of Aegir's sq make it sound attractive to me at the price, I am pretty convinced that a single Aegir, and possibly even a pair of them, just will not drive my 90dB (spec, no idea of the real measurement, but I am pretty sure it isn't higher) sensitive stand mounts to sufficient spl for me. Except for maximum volume levels, what are symptoms to tell that the Aegir is underpowered for the speakers? ). In the meantime, there will likely be a re-think needed since Schiit (contrary to their website info) has actually no real availability date as they're waiting on parts for the Freya+. Be respectful, keep it civil and stay on topic. Pair the Vidar with Schiit's smaller tube preamp, the $349 Saga, and that pair together runs just over $1,000. Using a Aegir with Kef LS50 in a near field desk setup, def a rich full sound, doesn't get too loud as the ls50 is 85db but def enjoying the combo currently.
